In the pursuit of an extra income or escape from the 9 to 5, we can quickly forget to stop and enjoy being in the now and this as a result is potentially having an effect on our happiness.
As a child, we could find happiness in the simplest of things, we believed that we could be anything and anyone that we wanted. Unfortunately, along our journey through adulthood, we seem to lose this optimism and with it our happiness.
Social media and reality TV has allowed those involved to give the perception that their lives are perfect and they live in a constant state of happiness, all done with the help of some clever editing.
The thing is this portrayal is like photos of models in magazines, they have been touched up with a nip and a tuck here and there, this simply isn’t attainable to the average Joe or Joanne on the street.
Don’t’ think that you will find happiness in making more money or buying possessions or trying to be like your favourite reality TV “star”. While these things might make you happy in the short-term they are unlikely to affect your happiness in the long-term.
Below are 24 ways you can be happy, today.
#1 Accept that you cannot be happy all the time
In accepting that you are sometimes going to be unhappy and this is okay is probably one of the best things that you can do on your road to happiness. No one is happy all the time and anyone that believes that they can are simply misguided.
#2 Take time out for yourself
We can’t please everyone all the time and we shouldn’t try to either. If you can take 10 minutes for yourself, do it, lay down in your bedroom, go for a walk or just sit in quiet and give yourself time to contemplate.
Being on your own and enjoying just being by yourself is natural so you don’t feel guilty in doing it.
#3 Do the things that make you happy
I absolutely love animals so being around them makes me happy. I’m also not ashamed to say, but as a 38-year-old man, I can’t think of anything better than to relax in front of the TV watching a “kids” film.
As long as it isn’t hurting anyone else, find out what makes you happy and just do it.
#4 Don’t be so hard on yourself
Trying to be perfect and living up other’s expectations of you, is just exhausting. Regardless of what some of those that post how great their lives are on social media or reality TV, life isn’t fair or perfect, we all have our insecurities and we’re all trying to get through this funny thing that is life as best we can.
#5 Listen to happy songs
You can’t help but be uplifted by listening to an upbeat song. Music can greatly affect our mood. Just as listening to a sad song can make you cry a happy song can do the opposite and lift you up when you most need it.
#6 Watch a company
Don’t underestimate the power of laughter, with so many horrible things happening in the world, sometimes just taking the time to laugh can quickly pick up your mood.
#7 Get some fresh air
We’re spending too much time indoors, whether that be watching TV or just vegging out on the sofa. Go for a walk, take in the view and take joy in the fact that you are able to enjoy what mother nature has given us.
#8 Get on your bike
Get some exercise, you don’t have to join a gym, there are plenty of free alternatives. Use a tin of beans as weights, do some star jumps, go for a walk or run.
Don’t make excuses that you don’t have the time. There are plenty of seven-minute work out apps that if done daily can improve your mood and happiness.
#9 Surround yourself with positive people
Nothing can affect your mood more than being surrounded by negative people who seem to be able to suck the joy out of any room that they might enter.
You know the type. The ones that you work with or in your social circle, that can see the negative in everything that you or anyone else has done.
#10 Disconnect with technology
Just because it’s on all the time doesn’t mean that you have to be. Try turning your phone off for a couple of hours, you’d be surprised how much you could do in those hours that you are not connected.
#11 Find a different job
We’re at work a good proportion of the day and that’s a long time to be unhappy.
If you’re not doing what makes you happy or you feel that your efforts are going unnoticed, is there anything that you can do to improve your circumstances? Take a course, ask for more responsibility and if that doesn’t change your mood, is it time for a change?
I’m not in the camp of leaving a job before you have another lined up, for me, it’s always best to get all your stars aligned before making any huge life-changing decisions.
#12 Be grateful for what you have
It’s easy to constantly be in the pursuit of more, but do you really need it. Write down all those things that you have to be grateful for. Whether that be health, a fantastic relationship, a group of great friends. The possibilities are endless.
#13 Achieve a goal
No matter how big or small, achieving a goal gives you a sense of accomplishment, which in turn can only serve to make you happy.
#14 Be in the moment
There is nothing wrong with setting goals for how you see your life in the next five to ten years but don’t let it detract you from what is going in your life now. Purely concentrating on the future could mean that you miss those opportunities that present themselves today.
#15 Change your diet
If you have a high sugar diet or one its high in processed foods it’s unlikely that you are going to be feeding your brain the necessary nutrients to enable it to work properly.
I’m no dietitian or nutritionist, so you can get more information about how your diet affects your mood below here.
#16 Learn something new
Learning a new skill does wonders for your confidence and might open new doors of opportunity.
#17 Give back
I’m not suggesting that to be happy you have to give yourself completely to helping others, but if you’re able to spare some time, there are some ways that you can give back to your community. Be a befriender to the elderly, volunteer at a charity shop or become a dog walker for an animal charity.
#18 Dance like you don’t care
Dance like no one is watching, dance in the nude if that floats your boat. Shake your hips move your bum, step from side to side Don’t worry if you’re no Patrick Swayze, just enjoy moving your body to a song that you love.
#19 Get a little frisky
Don’t get hung up on sex being perfect just enjoy it, whether it lasts five, 10, 30 minutes or hours. Just enjoy connecting and being with the person that you love or like for that night (remember to keep it safe!)
#20 Get your sleep
The average adult needs 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night. If you’re not getting this you’ll probably be irritable and not that pleasant to be around.
#21 Let go of the past
Don’t let what has happened in the past define who you are today.
I appreciate that some of you might have gone through awful experiences but in holding on to it, you are letting it define impact on yourself today and your future happiness.
#22 Join a team/Group
Being part of a group or team not only builds confidence, but achieving a common goal will give you a sense of accomplishment.
You only have to look the shared emotion of a sports team and their fans when they get promoted or avoid relegation or the joy seen in the faces of choir members singing a tune perfectly to see the benefits of team membership.
#23 Don’t be afraid to ask
People can surprise you sometimes.
If you need help don’t be afraid to ask for it. It isn’t a show of weakness but an act of strength and acknowledgement that you want to change your current circumstance.
#24 Don’t try and do too much at once
You’ve only got one pair of hands for a reason. Take on too much and you run the risk of disappointing yourself or increasing the feeling that you are disappointing someone else.
If you think that I’ve missed something, feel free to leave a comment.
