I started MoneyforMonday in 2016 not only as a way for me to become accountable for the decisions that I made about the money that I made and saved but also as a way for me to think about my relationship with money, help others consider their own relationship with it and hopefully make a little bit of extra money.
If you’re a regular to my blog you will have noticed that I haven’t posted anything for a few months now.
There are a number of reasons for this and if you’re interested here they are.
1. Frustrated by the blogs primary niche
I know that there are plenty of resources out there that claim to tell you how to make money online and offline if you know where to look and I’ve read enough of them and watched enough videos in an effort to try and find my inspiration.
Wrongly or rightly I’m of the view that when someone visits my site they have questions about money that hopefully I can answer or I can’t signpost them to somewhere that can. Their questions might include how they can make money or save money by doing something that they might not have thought about.
People will have their favourite blogs and will no doubt visit these first in the hope that these can provide an answer to their questions. What I have noticed now however is the regurgitation of the same information written by the same blogger only in a different way and this seems to be true with those tv shows that list themselves on being able to save money.
2. A Change in priorities
It’s not long now until my wife and I become parents for the first time and ensuring that our child has everything they need before for their arrival and after has been my main focus these past few months.
After you think that you have bought everything that you need ready for the arrival, you realised you haven’t got something that you really need, or in my case, my wife tells me that we need.
3. Spreading myself too thinly
I don’t have a special superpower that allows me to be in a load of different places all at the same time but that hasn’t stopped me thinking that I can spread my focus on numerous activities
Whether it’s reading, learning something new, trying to keep myself fit, blogging, thinking what I want to do with the rest of my life in terms of my career and then finding time to relax has obviously had an effect on my ability to write content.
4. Change in circumstances
Due to my wife feeling unwell in the first few months of pregnancy and some other issues that I won’t go into, we both made the decision that it would be best if she gave up work.
This might have been counterintuitive being that we obviously won’t benefit from maternity leave, but my wife’s health and that of our child comes first.
As a result of the above, a lot of decisions have been made and have to be made to make sure that we don’t find ourselves getting into financial difficulties.
5. Someone always wanting something for nothing
If I wanted to advertise my business in the local press or any other online platform I would expect them to want some level of compensation.
As a blogger, I receive emails in my inbox from other bloggers asking whether I would consider linking to a post on their blog. So long as it’s connected to my post I’m more than happy to consider their request without promise.
What I don’t appreciate as a blogger is being contacted by businesses and PRs telling me how much they love my blog and then asking me to add link to their website or a post in their blog a do-follow link and then tell me why I’m making a mistake by not taking them up on their offer.
If businesses want to work with me if they feel that they can add value to my readers then by all means they can contact me.
I do wonder how many of those that contact me would offer their services for free.
I’ll continue with MoneyforMonday as I believe that not only does it help me but is a useful resource anyone that wants to change their the way that they see their own relationship with money and if I can make enough money from it to ensure that pays for itself then there is no pressure to
