With money being a contributing factor in many relationship breakdowns, not only does it make sense that you should budget as a couple but you should also look at ways that you could make money together too.
In this post, I’m going to give you 12 ideas that couples could start as a side hustle and scaled up and become businesses that not only help you reach your financial goals together but allow you to reach them much quicker.
What business could you start as a couple?
Whether you’re looking to create a full-time income as a couple or a side hustle, there is no limit to what you can do.
In theory, anything that you can do on your own can be done as a couple.
The benefit of working as a couple is that you are not only sharing the burden of the business, but you might have skills that the other doesn’t and together complement each other.
Things consider before starting to make money as a couple
As well as the business idea itself there are some very important things you need to consider before you start making money as a couple.
How much time is each of you going to be able to put into the venture?
If you don’t set this out from the offset this could create problems down the line, especially if one of the couples feels like the other isn’t pulling their weight but still benefiting from the profits of that business.
How are you going to operate
You are working in partnership and so it might be a good idea to draw up a partnership agreement.
Whilst this seems quite formal when it’s a venture created by two people in love, sometimes things don’t work out and as a result, what would happen to this business should the worse happen and one of you decides that you no longer want to be a part of it or you break up
How will you split any profits?
Is it going to be a 50/50 split or is one person doing more work and entitled to more of the profits or are they going to be communal?
Ways to make money as a couple
1. Blog
Contrary to what some would have you believe blogging takes a lot of work so if you can share the responsibilities as a couple, it will lighten the load.
Before even starting a blog, you need to decide on a particular niche between you and decide whether you would be able to create content on a regular basis for that blog.
Once you have decided this you can then look at starting your blog, you might want to try free hosting it on a free platform to test the waters at first, but I’d recommend going with a hosted provider straight away, as they are less restrictive on the ways that you can make your money.
I use Lyrical Host for my hosting as not only are they good value for money, their customer service is exceptional and they have a Facebook group where its customers can ask questions and share their knowledge.
That’s only the start of it, there’s then managing social media, building links, keyword research, content creation, and networking.
To make money from a blog, you might be able to subscribe to an advertising network, through affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, or collaborations. Like anything online, earnings aren’t consistent so you are going to have to factor this into your decision.
2. Creating membership website
If you believe that you have the necessary skills to be able to offer those that pay more to gain more than they would from your blog, then creating a membership site will allow you to enjoy a monthly subscription.
Your subscription base will only be active so long as you are giving them something that benefits them, this might be creating exclusive content, 1 and 1 coaching or access to specific products that you have created that are not available to anyone else.
3. YouTube channel
If you are both passionate about a subject and neither of you doesn’t mind being in front of the camera then starting a YouTube channel might be for you.
Creating video content takes a lot of work, as you have to research what people are searching for in our particular niche, storyboard what you are going to talk about, film it, edit it, create thumbnails and upload it and even after all that you aren’t guaranteed to have any or many visitors to your channel without promotion.
There are many ways that you might make money as a YouTube couple including ad revenue, sponsored content, affiliate links and working with brands to create content.
4. Instagram
If one of you can take a good picture or are good at graphic design then Instagram is where you need to be.
Depending on what you’re posting about you’ll need to have an idea of what your target audience watches and create content around this. Social networks want people to be on them as long as possible so consistency is key.
People make money from Instagram featuring ads, sponsored content and affiliate links and the promotion and sale of their own products or services.
5. Pet sitting/boarding
If you love animals but don’t like the idea of the costs of having one then pet sitting is the perfect alternative.
As a couple, you can enjoy the affection that a pet gives and also the health benefits all while earning some money and getting to give the animal back.
Of course, there are other ways to make money if you love dogs and I highlighted them in a post that I wrote some time ago.
To get a feel of what people are charging for the services that you might want to offer, it would be worthwhile doing some pricing research into your potential customers.
To find work as a pet sitter you could try using websites like yoopies.
6. Home interior business
If one of you is handy at DIY and the other has an eye for detail, why not start a home interior business, where one of you can create the design and the other brings that idea to life.
If you’re able to do a few interiors, with the permission of the person that you’ve done the work for, take some pictures of the finished work, set up a website, get testimonials and get yourself out there.
7. Furniture restoration/upcycling
Again on the same lines as the idea for a home interior business, if one of you is able to bring a tied wardrobe or chest of draws to life then why not try your hand at restoration or upcycling and see how you get on selling your furniture on marketplaces and classified ads, if it takes off you might be able to even consider setting up your own online store or sell them on an auction website or another platform such as Etsy.
8. Create online courses
There are some platforms out there that enable people to sell an online course that they’ve created, and best of all if your course is evergreen it will keep on bringing in the revenue month on month and if you’re able to update with new content for those that have already paid, this is even better, as they would feel that they haven’t handed over their money and then left to their own devices.
Be available to ask questions and depending on your time constraints offer interactive sessions so that people can follow some up to date examples.
9. Rent a room
If you’re a homeowner and have a spare room why not consider taking in a lodger, it takes little to no effort and can get an income every month and so long it the room is furnished, also qualify for the Rent-a-Room-Scheme.
What you charge will depend on where you live, the room itself and whether you want to include bills in the rent.
10. Create digital products
It could be an ebook, digital photography, printables or software, if you’re able to solve a problem that somebody has then there is no reason why you can’t create a side hustle as a couple.
It might be that the digital product takes off and you would create a full-time business, but depending on the product they might be more suited as a side hustle.
How much you can make will depend on the product itself and what your competitors are selling the same items or similar items for, and what you are able to offer over and above what they are offering.
11. Podcasts
Podcasts are a great way of reaching an audience that is on the move or those that are looking to unwind with some thoughtful content.
Like all new ventures, if you create a podcast you aren’t going to see instant results and it’s the ability to come through this disappointment that can lead to you gaining traction and getting a regular audience.
You might not think that you can earn money from a podcast but many are, through sponsorship, creating content exclusively for paid members and through the endorsement of products and creating affiliate income.
12. Freelancing
Freelancing encloses a range of different skill sets, from anything like accounting, graphic design, videography. To find work as a freelancer you should use websites like Upwork and People Per Hour.
These websites work on the basis that someone will have a project and budget in mind and freelancers have the opportunity to send their proposal over to them and they will choose the one that suits their requirements.
As a couple that freelancers you might be able to pitch for work that is advertising with the added benefit that you could do the work in less time as it might take somebody doing it on their own
