In June, before the birth of our son, my wife and I were considering our options for how we were going to get our new baby home.
I hadn’t thought about it, as I had never needed it, but researched the idea one day car insurance.
Though we are a two car family neither of us are on each other’s insurance policy, are unable to drive each other’s car.
Neither of our cars are particularly fancy either, especially mine.
In fact I think that Morgan Freeman in Driving Miss Daisy would have overtaken my car given the chance.
Our difficulty lie in the fact that my car is only a three door while hers is a four door, so logistically hers would have been the better option.
What is Temporary or One Day Insurance?
I don’t have to blind you with the science here as the very title is self explanatory.
Essentially, it is a insurance that you obtain over a short period, usually between one and 30 days or longer, depending on the provider.
What does it cost?
You’ll not be surprised to find out that the cost of the insurance will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
- Your age
- The vehicle
- Your claim history
- How long you’ve been driving
The cheapest quote that I obtained was around £40 for a day, though if taken over the longer period there were discounts to be had.
This was the for cost for someone in their late 30s, driving a 1.2 with no claims.
What does one day insurance cover?
This type of cover is comprehensive so covers what you would expect any comprehensive policy to cover, but like any insurance you should always read the Ts&Cs before committing to the purchase.
Can anyone get one day insurance?
Different providers will have their own restrictions but most will insure you if you are over 19 or 17 if you are a learner driver.
Again the age in which you are able to get covered will depend on the provider of the policy.
Isn’t it cheaper to be a named driver on their policy?
One day insurance can be a cheaper alternative to becoming a named driver, especially if you are not going to have instant access to the vehicle.
Though cost shouldn’t be your only consideration as should their be an accident in the car, this could affect your own no claims and your insurance premiums when it came to renew the policy.
Where can I get one day car insurance?
You can buy the insurance from a number of companies, including the big names such as the RAC, but like anything
If you are going to part with your money I’d recommend that you do your research before you buy the settle on a particular one day insurance policy.
